What to do

St Johns House is ideal for people who enjoy the outdoors and exploring Ireland.

Fishing

For trout, perch and pike in season. May and September are the best for trout. Also boat hire is available from the house and fishing guides can be arranged. There is also a public slipway for launching boats close by. Lough Ree has some of the biggest trout in Ireland in excess of 9lbs but they can be difficult to catch!

Golf

There are 8 championship golf courses within 40 minutes drive, with Athone, Roscommon and Glasson under half an hour.

Cycling

The Tain trail and Green Heartlands cycle routes pass close to the property.

Birdwatching

Particularly good in winter and spring when migratory birds pass through. Swans nest on the island in front of the house and coots, moorhens and herons frequent the reed beds.

Egrets are now quite common.

Running

The Bogtrotters Marathon is a full, half and relay marathon that starts and ends in magnificent Strokestown Park in Strokestown, Co. Roscommon on Saturday 24th July 2010. Winding through the beautiful bog landscape of east Co. Roscommon to the town of Rooskey and back, the course is generally flat/undulating and well-drained, on tarmacked roads, bog roads and grassy tracks.
